Mom’s Pet Cemetery

Seven pets, at least, are buried where my sister and I played, digging and swinging without fearing the future.

The sandbox, swings, and siblings left, tears fell, weeds overgrew. But five dogs, a bunny, and a bird named Lucky remind us of life’s fragility, even after so many years.

  1. This is such a precious post, Danielle. Short, but filled with a lifetime of stories and memories.

  2. I love these sacred spaces in our yards (do we all have them?) where our family pets are laid to rest. Even when we move, they still seem to have a special space in our memories. The detail of the bird named Lucky was wonderful — I felt bad for chuckling.

  4. This line shows the passage of time so beautifully :The sandbox, swings, and siblings left, tears fell, weeds overgrew. Lovely as always, Danielle!

  5. You write nostalgia so well. It made me miss my childhood yard, but also think fondly of my current home and all of those to come.
